How to Read a Kundali โ€” Step by Step

Contents

1. Basic concepts

A Kundali is a snapshot of the sky at the moment of birth. Vedic astrology divides the sky into:

Nine grahas โ€” Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu โ€” are placed in these signs and houses, and their positions are read.

2. The three anchors

Almost every reading starts by understanding three things:

Lagna (Ascendant)
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It defines how you APPEAR and how you meet new situations. The 1st house is always the Lagna sign.
Moon sign / Janma Rashi
The sign the Moon was in. This is your INNER mind and emotional world โ€” more important than the Sun in Vedic readings.
Sun sign (sidereal)
The sign the Sun was in. Your CORE identity and soul direction. (Sidereal โ€” usually one sign earlier than the tropical sign in Western horoscopes.)

3. What the houses mean

The 12 bhavas cover 12 areas of life. The 1st = Lagna; the rest follow counterclockwise.

5. Planetary strengths

The sign a planet sits in determines its STRENGTH:

6. Timing: Vimshottari Dasha

The question of "when does what happen?" is answered by Vimshottari Dasha โ€” a 120-year cycle of 9 planetary periods. Each period activates the qualities of its ruling lord in your life.

7. A practical process

  1. Identify the Lagna โ€” sign of the 1st house.
  2. Read the Moon sign and Janma nakshatra โ€” emotional nature.
  3. Read the Sun sign โ€” soul direction.
  4. For each planet, note which house it sits in โ€” that area of life feels its influence.
  5. Check each planet's dignity (exalted / debilitated / own sign).
  6. Check the current Vimshottari Mahadasha โ€” which lord is active now.
  7. See which house the dasha lord occupies โ€” that area is highlighted right now.

Note: these are foundations. Advanced reading adds aspects, yogas, and divisional charts โ€” covered in the other learn pages.
